Our Guide to the Best in Tofino Whale Watching
One of our favourite adventures - Tofino whale watching. We've experienced it, so we'll tell you where to find the best tours!
Small and remote, the town of Tofino is located on Vancouver Island's beautiful and rugged West Coast, known as the Pacific Rim National Park.
From Nanaimo by car, it takes about 4 hours to get here.
Tofino's at the northern point of Pacific Rim Park and the village of Ucluelet, is at the southern point of the Park. This area of the Island is a major tourist destination for those looking for some rugged marine and outdoor wilderness experiences.
Half the adventure is getting TO the whale watching spot... riding in the high speed Zodiak. So get suited up, camera on and get ready to experience the best of Tofino Whale Watching!
Graeme and I have gone on a couple of really great Vancouver Island whale watching excursions in Tofino. Lots of tours are available, but here's our top two favourite tour companies we highly recommend.
Our Vote For Best Tofino Whale Watching Tours
Weigh West Marine Resort - A fantastic tour with exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable staff. Guide points out lots of extras on the tour too, such as Bald Eagle nesting sights and havens for Harbour Seals. Try to book this tour several days in advance if you can. Sometimes they can accommodate you on the same day.
This is the tour that gave us our first Zodiak ride, and what a blast! If you like fast boats, you'll love it! Visit their web site at

Jamie's Whaling Station - This is a popular whale watching tour company (they also offer other assorted marine adventures). Best to reserve your tour about a week in advance if you can. They also point out lots of extras along the coastline as you motor out to the whale watching spots.
On our tour, not only did we see magnificent whales, but we got fairly close to a multitude of sunbathing Harbour Seals on a rocky island jutting out of the Pacific. Tons of interesting sea birds too. Great photos! Visit their web site at
