Surfing Vacation Vancouver Island - Big Waves and Big Beaches

If you're looking for a great surfing vacation Vancouver Island has lots to offer!

The Island's actually a prime surfing destination - specifically on the western coast, where there are big open swells and empty beaches. You'll be surprised to find out what this amazing region has to offer surfers!

We know that most people might think of California or Hawaii when it comes to surfing. But this might surprise you... the Island actually has surf temperatures that have been compared to northern California!

But what makes surfing Vancouver Island more unique?

Empty surf.

There are places here where you can have miles and miles of stretched out beach and open surf all to yourself. You don't have to look out for anyone else. This is your space. Your ocean.

The Island is a hidden gem when it comes to surfing BC. We've stumbled on some secluded spots (mostly known only to locals) that we've dug up for you...

And for the truly adventurous hard-core surfers, we'll tell you about a really unique wilderness surf adventure we've uncovered that's "off the beaten path." You'll want to know about Nootka Island.

Where Our Waves Come From

Storms that originate in the Gulf of Alaska build over the Pacific Ocean and travel on down to the western edge of Vancouver Island.

We also get waves that travel and build up across the open Pacific from Japan.

All this means that the waves are big, powerful and consistent which is making Vancouver Island a surfer's paradise.

The Best Times To Surf

If you're a beginner surfer, the best time to learn surfing on the west coast of the Island is May through early September. This is when the swells are small and learning your board is easiest.

If you're an intermediate or experienced surfer, then you'll find swells reach one-and-one-half metres to six metres from late September, right through February.

Water temperatures here on the Island are good (which makes this an all-year sport), sitting at around 50 degrees F throughout much of the year. Summer temperatures have been recorded locally up to 58 degrees F in the summer.

ALERT!

Be aware that Parks Canada insists that a full body wetsuit and booties should be worn year round - the majority of their rescues are for people not wearing wetsuits.

The Best Spots

To make the most of your surfing vacation Vancouver Island has some prime locations.

So we've narrowed it down to the three top spots:

Tofino (Long Beach) - west coast surfing

Nootka Island - west coast surfing

Jordan River and Sombrio Beach - southwest coast surfing
