Port Hardy BC - Your Stop For Wilderness Adventures
The town of Port Hardy BC is a great place to experience a wide range of outdoor adventures.
With a population of just 5,000 and situated at the northern tip of the Island, Port Hardy BC is a friendly town with uncrowded and unspoiled wilderness - a perfect stop on your Vancouver Island driving vacation.
For an easy hike (even for families) and to see spectacular scenery, go on a half day trip to gorgeous San Joesph Bay. For a longer hike, we'd recommend a venture into famous Cape Scott National Park.
Take a free forest tour and see some of the island's most beautiful forest (tours take about 5 hours).
Port Hardy BC is where you can kayak, canoe, or hike in some pretty spectacular locations. Transportation to remote locations is available.
Did you know that Port Hardy is a year-round destination for divers?
It's rated as one of the best dive locations in the world for water clarity and tidal action. Local dive shops include gear rentals and fully equipped dive boats.
WEATHER IN PORT HARDY BC
Port Hardy is located on northern Vancouver Island, and the weather here can be quite different from the rest of the Island.
December and January tend to be the coldest months with the highest amount of precipitation (otherwise known as RAIN!)
Not only does it rain in the winter months, but being farther north, there tends to be more rainfall during the rest of the year than other parts of the Island.
Plan on packing an umbrella/raincoat just to be on the safe side. However, rain doesn't "dampen" the spirit of this town... Rain or shine, the locals still enjoy the great outdoors here, including fantastic salmon fishing!
You can count on July through September to be the sunniest and warmest months up in Port Hardy - the best months to come up and hike and camp on the beach.
Where to Stay in Port Hardy
A really nice hotel to stay at is the
Glen Lyon Inn & Suites
. Situated right on the waterfront overlooking Hardy Bay, it's only a few minutes to the Inside Passage ferry terminal (the 15 hour trip to Prince Rupert on the BC mainland) and is close to downtown and the bus depot.
It's super convenient to stay at this hotel, as they'll arrange for you any local adventures you want to go on: kayaking, whale watching, wildlife viewing, scuba diving, charter fishing, grizzly tours, or a free forest tour.
The Glen Lyon has a good restaurant and pub. If you've come to fish, the friendly kitchen staff will even cook up your catch for you. They'll also prepare a lunch for you if you decide to go off on an adventure.
It's quite easy to get to the Glen Lyon. Turn onto Hardy Bay Road, which rims the waterfront leading to Port Hardy. The hotel is located immediately adjacent to the marina and the seaplane base.
