From easy adventures, to remote wilderness experiences - Graeme and I agree that you can pretty much do it all up on the northern Island. We've got the photos to prove it!

In July 2006, we went whale watching from the Alder Bay campsite, located between Port McNeill and Telegraph Cove on the northern Island. Here's our humpback whale picture - just the top of it gently rising out of the ocean. Amazing creatures... and plenty of them out here! (NOTE: Humpbacks do come into this area, although not as common as the Orcas).
We got some great humpback whale tail pictures! This is the most anticipated photo of any whale watching tour... and we've never been disappointed here on the Island. We get plenty of great shots!
Another great photo of the tail, on it's way down! Usually after the tail comes up (flukes) the whale heads down for about 4 or 5 minutes and then resurfaces.
Here's a photo we took when we visited the small (but super-friendly) village of Port Alice, located roughly about 30 minutes west of Port Hardy. This is the Neroutsos Inlet - a really great area for fishing we've been told.
Here's a photo of a gorgeous lake we found on our drive between Port Hardy and Port Alice. This is typical scenery you'll find on the northern Island - quiet, pristine wilderness.
Here I am with my son, stopping at a picnic site at Marble River Provincial Park. This area (located on Marble River) is a really remote, but beautiful place to camp, stop for a lunch, or to just look around.
But be cautious of black bears and cougars - there's plenty of them up here on north Vancouver Island!
