Our Guide to Eco Lodging on
Vancouver Island

Where to Find the Most Unique "Green" Vacation Rentals

Prefer to stay "green?" Take a look into eco lodging vacation rentals on Vancouver Island that will make your outdoor adventures totally unique!

Sleep suspended in the trees. Cozy up in luxury tents with composting toilets. We've dug up several alternative accommodation rentals on Vancouver Island that are worth experiencing!

Small budget? Large budget? Whatever you've got, read on to see what we've found for your Vancouver Island eco vacation travel.

Add these to your eco vacations list! Here they are...

Sleep In The Trees

FREE SPIRIT SPHERES - Looking for a more affordable eco vacation rental? Check out Free Spirit Spheres (open year-round).

Located in the forests of Qualicum Bay (eastern Vancouver Island), these treehouse spheres are suspended by cables, nestled in the forest. They didn't knock down trees or pour concrete to get this accommodation up and running.

Choose from two sphere models to stay in. "Eve" is small and can only comfortably accommodate one person. The second sphere "Eryn" is bigger and can sleep three people (more like 2 adults and 1 child).

A composting toilet outhouse is located at the base of the spheres (but more modern bathrooms are also available on-site). Both spheres are a bit cramped and we wouldn't recommend them as a long-term stay, but the concept is unusual and intriguing enough to experience it for a night or two.

STAYING HERE...

A good location that puts you relatively close to the "not-to-miss" Horne Lake Caves - spend a half to a full day "spelunking", and close to Spider Lake - good for gentle kayaking and trout fishing. Click Here to check out their website to get more of the details.

Luxury Eco Tents

CLAYOQUOT WILDERNESS RESORT: BEDWELL RIVER OUTPOST - Got a really big budget? Go green in super luxurious style by having a luxury eco vacation in a tent at the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, western coast of Vancouver Island.

This is a really unique, remote place to stay (open May through October), and three nights has to be your minimum stay. White safari-style guest tents each have their own private composting toilet in a separate building. Choose from riverside tents (overlooking beautiful Bedwell River), forest tents, or mountain view tents.

Generators provides electricity and hot water for 10 cedar showers clustered in two separate buildings. No worries - if you're looking for a luxury vacation spa resort, you'll still get it all here! There's a spa tent, a lounge tent and expect pretty unreal gourmet meals.

The outpost resort offers a HUGE array of really great things to do - both guided or unguided. Our recommendations: take the Hot Springs Cove guided trip and/or the horseback riding into the forest. This place is really the ultimate in eco lodging!

GETTING HERE...

To get to the outpost, you'll need 2 boat rides: First, a 30 minute ride aboard the lodge's Stress Buster from the town of Tofino. Then, another 20 minute boat ride from the resort's main (floating) lodge in Quait Bay.

Call the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort directly at 1-888-333-5405, or Click Here for their website if you want more info, or to make a reservation.

Strathcona Park Lodge

One of our favourite eco lodges on Vancouver Island! Hidden away, wilderness Strathcona Park Lodge & Outdoor Education Centre is buried back into rugged Strathcona Park along on the shores of Upper Campbell Lake. The Lodge is a calm, restful eco adventure getaway on Vancouver Island.

We love the Lodge’s “self-propelled” recreation theme: cycling, hiking, kayaking and some pretty great rock climbing opportunities. No power boats allowed here! Don't miss spending a day doing some excellent lake kayaking. Check into the Lodge's multi-day Nootka Island packages. Not cheap, but it's one heck of an itinerary!

Along with a composting, recycling and power-saving program (they make their own electricity), Strathcona Park Lodge offers rustic-style cabins, chalets and cottages - all right on the lake. There's a cafeteria/restaurant on the premises (actually quite good), or cook your own meals in your cabin. To do this, stock up on groceries in the City of Campbell River before you head out. Check out the Strathcona Park Lodge website for all the info.

Have a great experience eco lodging on Vancouver Island!
