Vancouver Island: One of The Best Family Vacation Spots in The World!

Got kids? We think that one of the best family vacation spots in Canada is here - Vancouver Island! And we're not saying that just because we live here.

We've traveled a fair bit (South America, Europe, Mexico, Alaska and the western U.S., and across Canada), but the Island is actually one of our favourite places to explore and holiday!

When you've got kids, your priorities change. We understand that. Exploring new places and finding unique adventures that the kids can enjoy and feel safe at, is the best kind of holiday.

From whales to goats, to some pretty unique museums, and playgrounds. We definitely say there's no shortage of great family adventures to do when you get here!

SO WHY DO WE THINK OUR ISLAND IS THE ONE OF THE BEST FAMILY VACATION SPOTS? Because...

  • See nature in real life! You're bound to see bald eagles, black bears, elk, deer, whales, sea lions, salmon spawning and lots more! Kids (and parents too) love seeing our animals in their natural habitat.
  • Let the kids run wild on miles and miles of gorgeous, safe, open beaches all over the Island, while parents watch and relax!
  • Victoria (our largest city) absolutely caters to families, with TONS of fantastic city attractions for kids (zoos, museums, and more)
... and these are only a few reasons (we just don't have enough space!)

We wanted to come up with a "Top 10 List" of our favourite family adventures here on the Island. But making just a Top 10 was INCREDIBLY HARD TO DO!

However... in consultation with our 10 year-old son, Nolen, we've narrowed it down and put together our Top 10 list of family vacation getaway ideas for Vancouver Island!

Our Top 10 Best Family Adventures across Vancouver Island

  1. Whale watching in Tofino (best time: Summer & Fall)

  2. The Victoria Bug Zoo & The Royal BC Museum in Victoria (Year-Round)

  3. Beacon Hill Park Children's Farm (best time: late Spring, Summer & early Fall)

  4. A day in Parksville : explore the beaches, mini-golf at Paradise Fun Park & play at Lions Venture Land Playground (best time: Summer & early Fall)

  5. Camp at Lakeshore Campground - on Sproat Lake (best time: Summer)

  6. Salmon run in Goldstream Provincial Park, Victoria (best time: late Fall)

  7. Storm watching on Long Beach (best time: Winter)

  8. Train trip on the E&N Railiner between Victoria and Nanaimo (Year-Round)

  9. Walk through Cathedral Grove and Caving at Horne Lake Caves - take a half day to see 800 yr. old trees and the other half day to see some spectacular ancient limestone caves (best times: late Spring, Summer & early Fall)

  10. Ski and snowshoe on Mount Washington (best time: January, February)
